Holy ghost of Azores

Some days ago in the near of Silveira a van from the bakery came across on the street, the backdoor was open, and some men jumped off, with huge bread in their hands. They stopped our car, and hand in fresh baked sweet bread. I was sitting confused with the two new "traveller" on my knee. "Don't worry, is the tradition of the Holy Spirit" - told João calmly.

One of the most unique tradition of the Azores is the Holy Ghost Festival (Festa do Divino Espirito Santo), which is held in the seventh Sunday after Easter. It shows not only the religious aspects of the Azorean people, but their hospitality as well: sharing itself is one of the most important attributes of the festa. They share wine, meat, bread, in order to thank to the holy spirit - the white dove, the symbol of the holy ghost.

The Festival of the Holy Ghost followed by other festivities during summer give a good opportunity to people to gather together, eat, dance, celebrate, and just feeling fine

Work in progress - preparation for the "festa" 2013. To see the wonderful photos by Miguel Madeira click here.
